Had an unexpected bill come in this week, always happens at the wrong time more so with holidays coming up.
Finding an extra $500 isn’t exactly easy when you’re not expecting to need it. It means having to make some adjustments, cutting back on the usual weekly spend, or dipping into savings you’d earmarked for something else. It’s a good reminder that life rarely sticks to the plan, and that’s why having a buffer matters. Still, it stings a bit.
But it’s not all doom and gloom this week. I’ve managed to get the sway window manager working as a single select-able option in the ArchBang boot menu. This is one of those small wins that probably doesn’t mean much to most people, but for those of us tinkering with Linux distributions, it’s a nice bit of progress. Users can now boot directly into sway without any extra configuration, which opens up ArchBang to those who prefer a wayland-based tiling window manager over the current Openbox default.
Getting that working properly took some thought – it’s not just about slapping a different WM onto the ISO and hoping for the best. It’s about making sure everything integrates cleanly, the boot menu presents the option clearly, and the whole experience feels intentional rather than bolted on. But it’s done, and it’s working.
So there we are – one expensive, frustrating week offset slightly by the satisfaction of shipping something that actually works. That’s about the best you can hope for sometimes.
Installer will work but will of course default to ArchBang Openbox for now, it is more a case of figuring logic to add the kernel line option ‘sway=1’ to bootloader. Something I will be of course working towards in the near future.
If you’ve found ArchBang useful and feel like lending a hand, even a $1 donation helps more than you’d think. I’m genuinely grateful for all the support, whether it’s financial or just people using the project and giving feedback. It all matters, and it all helps keep things moving forward.
Will upload a new image soon
Stay safe 😉
