ArchBang Winter – Release Candidate

A new ArchBang release candidate is up: archbang-rc-011126-x86_64.iso.

This is the first build of the winter release. Please treat it as a release candidate, not a final release.

Why an RC?

The installer (abinstall) has had a lot of rework. Boot is tested on BIOS and UEFI, and Auto and Manual installs have passed in VMs. It has not had much use on real hardware yet. That’s where you come in. Please try it, and report anything that breaks.

What’s new

  • Noctalia 5.4.1 shell on MangoWC, colours taken from the wallpaper. This version includes security fixes for the lockscreen and idle lock: other programs can no longer send fake D-Bus signals to unlock the screen or stop it locking.
  • Tag layouts: tag 1 tile, tag 2 floating, tag 3 full-width scroller, tag 4 monocle, tags 5–9 tile. Focus now follows clicks, not the mouse pointer. The Guide covers the details.
  • Super+I launches the installer. Super+E opens l3afpad.
  • Event sounds via sound-theme-freedesktop.

Installer changes

  • The installer now offers two partitioning options, Auto and Manual. Encryption (LUKS) and LVM have been removed to keep the installer simple. If you need them, set them up by hand.
  • For Manual on BIOS, use a dos (MBR) partition table, or GPT with a bios_grub partition.
  • The installer now checks for a boot partition after manual partitioning.
  • Language names now show in English. Steps that succeed get a short pause instead of waiting for Enter.
  • The live USB no longer shows up as an install target, and renaming the live user now works properly.

If something breaks, especially in the installer on real hardware, please report it. Tell us whether the machine boots BIOS or UEFI and whether you picked Auto or Manual.
