ArchBang Installer …. What’s Changed

Been working on the installer this week. Something has bothered me for a while — while a menu-driven interface works, it doesn’t flow. What do I mean by that? A user has to select a number from the menu and then after each step return to the list. Why not just move on to the next step automatically?

So I’ve removed the menu and now each step of the installer runs in sequence. This not only makes installation easier but quicker too.

Setting up user and root passwords was previously handled by a small script outside of the installer — that’s now been folded into the main installer script, tidying things up nicely.

For this release I’ve gone with an ‘rc’ to make sure everything works as it should. It’s a meaningful change to the installer so better to be cautious. There are also some small changes and cleanups elsewhere in the source, but nothing exciting to worry about.

Finally, woke up to a new kernel update this morning — so the ISO will be running the latest kernel and updated packages.
