Time to tidy things up! As part of streamlining GreenBang, I’m planning to stop shipping xf86‑video‑intel by default.
Why?
The legacy Intel DDX driver is broadly deprecated in favour of the modesetting driver, which provides better maintenance, stability, and compatibility with modern setups
. It works out‑of‑the‑box for most Intel hardware released since around 2010–2011 (i.e. Gen4 and newer), while the older driver is generally only needed for ~15‑year‑old systems or earlier.
What’s changing?
From the next release, xf86-video-intel will not be included by default. Thought about adding a systemd service to run a script to check if driver was required. It adds a layer of complexity to iso for very little gain. to that end I decided that removing driver was the easier option.
For older Intel hardware (pre-2011 era), users can still install it manually:
sudo pacman -S xf86-video-intel
If you’re installing from a live environment, remember you’ll need a working network connection to pull the package post-boot.
Good news SwayBANG Wayland is getting more downloads and thinking I am close to an actual release. Am happier with Waybar now and feel that with new launcher menu users might take the plunge and try it out.
Forgive me for not posting an update on iso image over weekend. Was busy with real world stuff. Though I did manage to get both iso images updated with up to date packages and latest kernel.
Fully expected that brand change would possibly put users off and it has affected donations. Well aware that only time will tell if users start to return. Am still looking to remove ads from website, would you believe I am about $1.50 away from drawing money out.
September will be a busy month for me, am 61 in a couple of days time. Will be thinking about Autumn and refreshing the look of both iso images.
While I remember yay-install has been replaced with greenaur script. This is simple aur package builder, you can use it too install an aur helper [yay/paru] or maybe an application that you might need or even just want to try out.
Stay safe 😉
